An Evening With Bernie

There was no shortage of presidential candidates touring New Hampshire on Monday. Senator Bernie Sanders the favorite to win the Democratic primary on February 6 was at Manchester Community College to address a crowd of supporters who hung on his every word. He interacted with the audience several times asking them about college debts and mortgages. One young woman who is a teacher said she has college debts that she will be paying of for 25 years. When Bernie said she should be able to refinance those loans she got very enthusiastic. Prior to Bernie taking the stage there was an almost carnival atmosphere in the room with individuals, couples and groups taking selfies to record their night out with Bernie. A highlight for me was meeting and getting to know a legendary photographer, David Burnett. David has been published in National Geographic and Time and recorded many of the major world events of the last 45 years and been named one of the “100 Most Important People in Photography” and been named Magazine Photographer of the Year by the National Press Club.  Checkout his bio and galleries on his website: http://www.davidburnett.com/ No doubt you will find some photos you recognize.

 

Bernie Leads the Way as Candidates Parade Through Milford, NH

The Milford Labor Day parade drew several presidential candidates and a raft of supporters for other candidates. Bernie Sanders’ supporters carrying signs and chanting “Bernie” and “Sanders in the White House” numbered about 1000. John Kasich had about 100 supporters, and the rest had fewer.  Kasich, Carly Fiorina, Lindsey Graham and Bernie were the candidates marching. People were thronging and cheering Bernie as he walked by while the other candidates marched down the middle of the street with little enthusiasm shown by any of the spectators.

Bernie Back in the Granite State

Bernie Sanders was on a roll this weekend in New Hampshire; he gave five long talks in as many towns over two days, hitting Manchester, Exeter, Franklin, Claremont and the Dover area. Enthusiastic crowds greeted him at each stop. His son, Levi, introduced him at the Claremont Town Hall meeting while Bernie beamed with pride. The most dramatic response from the crowd in Claremont came when the Senator said that income inequality had to change.

Having attended Sanders events since April before he was an announced candidate, it has been fascinating watching him become more confident as a speaker and more animated with his audiences. He seems to be really enjoying this campaign now. I had an opportunity to speak with Levi and see him as much of a quality guy as his dad.  I continue to #feelthebern.

2015 FINA World Series of Diving Meets in Windsor, Ontario

The worlds best divers from China, Ukraine, Britain, Canada, USA, Cuba, Germany, Mexico, and Malaysia met in Windsor Ontario at its International Aquatic Center to compete in the 5 leg of the World Series of Diving sponsored by FINA.  All of these divers either have been at the London Olympics in 2012 or will be at the Rio Games in 2016; some have even been at the Beijing Games in 2008 and the Athens Games of 2004.  Some are World Champions, some are Olympic medalists, some are PanAmerican champions, some European champions.  Some are teenagers, some are in their 30s.  All are exceptional athletes and many have become my friends. The 2016 Progressive Rock Star!

Bernie Sanders of Vermont is shaking up the Democratic primary with a grassroots campaign that is taking on the special interests and billionaire donor class.  Among other things, he is also pressing for: breaking up the big banks, free education, lessening income inequality, and undoing the Citizens United decision with a Constitutional amendment.  These photos were taken at an home gathering in Hanover, NH before he was an official candidate and one in Manchester, NH just after his formal announcement. In Hanover, Bernie arrived to speak with about 20 of us with his driver and campaign director, Nick Carter at the home that was marked by signs left over from his last senate campaign. CUBA!

I had the privilege of going to Cuba in March to photograph the Cuban Olympic Diving Team.  While the Cubans only have two divers who have had Olympic experience (José Guerra has been to 4 Olympics) I was able to work with the Olympic development program and got a chance to photograph future Cuban stars.  Here are photos of Yenkler Aguirre and José.  These guys and the others on the team are truly amazing in that their practice venue, equipment, and travel are all very make shift.  Their coaches, who are paid little are committed to these athletes and themselves sacrifice considerably to make the team happen.

Hillary Clinton Energizes New Hampshire Democrats

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton came to New Hampshire November 2, 2014 to support the all-female ticket of Hassan, Shaheen, Kuster and Shea-Porter.  A rally of several hundred supporters gathered at Nashua Community College.
