The worlds best divers from China, Ukraine, Britain, Canada, USA, Cuba, Germany, Mexico, and Malaysia met in Windsor Ontario at its International Aquatic Center to compete in the 5 leg of the World Series of Diving sponsored by FINA. All of these divers either have been at the London Olympics in 2012 or will be at the Rio Games in 2016; some have even been at the Beijing Games in 2008 and the Athens Games of 2004. Some are World Champions, some are Olympic medalists, some are PanAmerican champions, some European champions. Some are teenagers, some are in their 30s. All are exceptional athletes and many have become my friends.
I had the privilege of going to Cuba in March to photograph the Cuban Olympic Diving Team. While the Cubans only have two divers who have had Olympic experience (José Guerra has been to 4 Olympics) I was able to work with the Olympic development program and got a chance to photograph future Cuban stars. Here are photos of Yenkler Aguirre and José. These guys and the others on the team are truly amazing in that their practice venue, equipment, and travel are all very make shift. Their coaches, who are paid little are committed to these athletes and themselves sacrifice considerably to make the team happen.
Held at the Natatorium in Indianapolis the men’s competition featured several Olympians and many aspiring ones. Here are some shots of Kristian Ipsen of Stanford and a Bronze Medalist in London. Other photos are of: John Santeiu of Auburn, Logan Shinholser of Virginia Tech, Taylor Sishe of Stanford and Rafael Quintero of Arizona.
